About Good News Lutheran College

Good News Lutheran College is situated on 20 acres in Tarneit and Mambourin approximately 30 kms from the Melbourne CBD and has landscaped gardens, recreational spaces surrounding classrooms and buildings. The College also has a gymnasium, chapel, and sports ovals, along with new and modern facilities for Technologies, Science and Arts.

Good News Lutheran College aims to provide an educational pathway for each student by focusing on strong Christian values. Staff members of Good News Lutheran College share a vision of working with parents to support their children as they grow and develop. While offering support, teachers encourage students to take responsibility for their own decisions and to form their own attitudes and opinions about life.

The College has grown significantly from a small group of 24 students who commenced in 1997, to its first Year 12s graduating at the end of 2016. Today, the College serves over 1,800+ students across both campuses.

 

About the Role

The Teacher Librarian supports the mission, vision and values of the College community and the College's Lutheran tradition wherein respect is the foundation for all relationships.

They will work collaboratively with all teachers and the library team to deliver resources for students and staff and to ensure that the library offers innovative, effective and efficient library services and programs.

 

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

1. Library Reading Program

• Deliver the library reading program

• Design and update the program to reflect a range of different reading levels and tastes

• Promote all physical and online reading resources to staff and students

• Work with staff and students to develop a culture of reading and to enhance literacy skills

 

2. Information Services

• Design and deliver programs and services to assist students and staff with their information and research needs.

• Contribute to students' understanding of the role of information skills and resources for lifelong learning.

• Model and encourage 21st Century collaborative learning behaviors, fully utilizing available web technologies.

• Assist with the selection and promotion of appropriate print and digital resources to meet the curricula and recreational needs of students and teachers.

 

3. Curriculum Liaison

• Collaborate with classroom teachers to develop meaningful activities that integrate information literacy.

• Consult with teachers to identify and evaluate information resources appropriate to their learning and teaching programs.

• Remain up to date with the core curriculum components of each Year Level/Learning Area and current teaching pedagogy.

• Attend relevant College meetings in order to monitor current and future curriculum priorities and the adequacy of library resources.

• Work with the library team to build the library collection in line with teacher/student needs and current curriculum and in line with the school’s Collection Development Guidelines

• Promote an understanding of the essential relationship between reading ability and academic success.

 

4. General Library Services

• Promote the role of the library and disseminate information about its resources, facilities and services.

• Supervise students and maintain discipline in the library.

• Complete regular activities such as shelving, shelf checking and collection weeding.

• Assist with student mentoring and promote student wellbeing.

• Work with the library team to produce and disseminate library publications.

• Maintain the atmosphere of the library as a place of learning as well as a space of wellbeing within the school.

• Provide an environment that encourages a habit and love of reading and of sharing literature.

• Provide a stimulating, positive and helpful environment that is a focal point and showcase for students’ learning achievements.

 

5. Professional Practice

• Attend training and professional learning programs.

• Keep abreast of updates to library electronic systems including but not confined to Clickview, LibGuides and AccessIt Library System.

• Keep abreast of latest trends in school library services, with a view to implementation where appropriate.

• Keep abreast of Young Adult literature for the purposes of promotion of young adult reading.

• Attend library team and whole staff meetings, as required.

• Participate in annual performance reviews.

 

Variation to Role

The Principal or delegate may assign other duties from time to time which are broadly consistent with the role or vary the Position Description, after appropriate consultation, in response to the changing needs of the College.

Child Safety

All staff are responsible for supporting the safety of children and young people by:

  • Complying with the Child Protection Policies, the Child Safety – Staff Code of Conduct and any other policies or procedures relating to child safety.
  • Taking reasonable steps to protect children from abuse.
  • Understanding and complying with all reporting obligations as they relate to mandatory reporting and reporting under the Crimes Act 1958.
  • Assist in the provision of a child-safe environment for students.
  • Demonstrate duty of care to students in relation to their physical, social and emotional wellbeing.

The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate:

  1. Commitment to Lutheran values.

  3. Proven success as a teacher.
  4. Deep understanding of current educational thought and practice.
  5. a high level of competence in the use of ICT in an educational setting.
  6. excellent communication, administrative and organisational skills;
  7. an ability to work productively with fellow teachers and support staff in a collaborative decision making structure.
